D-Link Launches Dual Channel Wireless N Router

I suspect this is going to be the next breakthrough development in wireless routers and D-Link is leading the charge...

Designed to, once and for all, eliminate the bandwidth problems associated with streaming media around the house the DIR-855 employs the ingenious approach of supporting true concurrent 802.11n transmissions over both 2.4GHz and 5GHz channels simultaneously. In English: two independent wireless signals, two independent full bandwidths. Nice.

Let's take a real world scenario: you can stream High Definition video over your network using one channel while VoIP or heavy P2P downloading occurs on the other. For families or flat shares in particular this could prove a revelation. The only snag is to take advantage of this technology you'll need either a laptop equipped with Intel's 4965AGN chipset (which is most modern models) or its companion adaptor (the DWA-160). Older chipsets simply won't be able to detect both 2.4GHz and 5GHz channels.

That aside, with three dual external antennae to aid coverage, an OLED network activity display on the top, Dual Active Firewall (SPI, NAT), Green Ethernet technology, backwards compatibility with 802.11a/g and D-Link's incredible 11 year warranty there's little else to worry about.

The D-855 goes on sale in May with an RRP of £169.99. Expect other manufacturers to be busy duplicating this idea as we speak...
