There are cheaper ways to extend the range of your WiFi coverage, but this is easily the coolest.

The 'Extreme Range WiFi Router' has just turned up for sale without ceremony on ThinkGeek but I think it's worth a little pomp because it claims to throw signal "nearly a quarter mile"!

For the Europeans amongst us (we're British, so we take everything but your weights and measures) this translates to roughly 400m and should satisfy even that most palatial of properties (apart from, probably, actual palaces) and it achieves this incredible throw by testing the legal boundaries.

The ERWR (my acronym, I'm lazy - though I could have typed it by now rather than explaining *ho, hum*), in the words of the site itself: "blasts out 802.11b and 802.11g at 30dBm of power - the strongest radio allowed by the FCC [and] extreme receiving sensitivity of -96dBm, so even weak clients can be heard".

Sadly, despite all this oomph, the ERWR (see it's saving me time now... *damn*) is 802.11g only so no wireless n goodness. That said, security is pretty tight with WPA-Enterprise, WPA2 and even WEP (if you want to be easily hackable). For those who are counting, it (Hah! That worked. Kind of... *drat*) also has four 100Mbit Ethernet ports.

Making us just a little bit sniffley however is the price: $284.99 (approx. £145) for which cost you could buy a wireless n router and signal booster and still have change to spare. Still, when you look at something as wacky as the ERWR (darn efficient acronym that, served me well) it's hardly the point...
