The only downside to writing about Option's spectacular HSUPA data card earlier this month:: I thought we'd wait an age before networks took advantage of it. WRONG!

Vodafone has stepped into the breach to bring us a new mobile broadband first: download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and (HSUPA enabled) uploads speeds of up to 1.44Mbps by early Q4!

As you might expect, not all areas of the UK will be able to get these blockbusting new speeds right off the bat however, but central London districts: E1, E1W, E14, EC1, EC2, EC3, EC4, NW1, SW1, W1, W2, W8, W9, W10, W11, W14, WC1, WC2 and the countries main airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, London City, Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham, East Midlands, Liverpool, Manchester, Belfast City, Belfast International, Cardiff and Norwich) will all be wisely prepped from day one.

New USB modems and next gen ExpressCards (like the one from Option above) will also greet the arrival of the racing new service - which shouldn't come at any premium - so make sure you start hitting up Vodafone for new upgrades in the next few months.

Interestingly, this announcement also means that mobile broadband speeds have improved more than 10x since the service launched in 2004. By 2007 I doubt anyone expected to get faster net access on the move than most have at home, but I guess this is the wonderful technological world we now live in...
