There has been a lot of debate about whether Draft N wireless gear will be compatible with final ratified standard (still some 12 months away). Draft 2.0 however will remove that worry and kit based on it will appear in stores from next month.

No vendors have yet stepped forward to proclaim specific products but expect formal announcements on Draft 2.0 equipment any minute and prepare yourselves for potentially even better news: many Draft 1.0 products can simply be upgraded!

That's right, Broadcom, Belkin, D-Link, Netgear and others say they will start issuing firmware updates before the end of June. With it will come additional functionality including the ability to seek for legacy devices and better data transfer speeds when used with a/b/g hardware.

A further sign of Draft 2.0's solidity is that all Draft 2.0 certified products will work with one another – regardless of brand – and that they can be upgraded to the final certified 802.11n whenever that Godot of a standard sees the light of day.

"With the arrival of Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 802.11n draft 2.0 products, we end the practice of uncertain claims of Wi-Fi draft compliance by independent vendors," said Ken Dulaney, VP of Gartner Research. "Consumers can now purchase products with improved performance and be assured of interoperability.

So save up some cash, because the first guaranteed kosher next gen wireless kit arrives next month and you'll finally be able to get to work swapping over that monstrous pr0n collection...
