With everyone from BT and Cable & Wireless to NTL and Sky offering flat rate monthly charges for unlimited UK landline calls some of the fizz has gone out of VoIP. So Skype has decided to do something about it.

This week the company has launched ‘Skype Pro’, an all-in-one package which costs £9.20 (incl. VAT) for five months and offers ‘pay nothing per minute’ calls to UK landlines (there is a 0.029p per call connection fee in the UK, elsewhere it varies), £4 Skype credit, free Skype Voicemail and a £16 discount on SkypeIn numbers.

Furthermore the VoIP giant is bundling vouchers to save £21 on a Philips VoIP 841 cordless phone, £7 on an SMC WiFi phone, discount vouchers on ‘Unyte Desktop Sharing Extra’ (no idea!), two free animated avatars from CrazyTalk and three free ringtones from Emotive. Phew!

Obviously all Skype-to-Skype calls globally remain free whether accompanied with video or just audio and international calls to other countries remain unaffected.

Skype Pro is up and running now and can be found from the link below. If only we didn’t all still need landlines for our broadband...
