Kazaa Goes Legit

Legally embattled P2P network Kazaa has this week re-emerged as a legit music download service after agreeing to cough up a mountain of compensation and issue a slew of apologies.

Up and running in all countries except Australia (where lawsuits still remains unsettled) the software retains many of its familiar features such as file searching for movies, music, games, software and documents though each file is now carefully checked for legitimacy before submission. Downloadable in either an ad-supported free version or $29.95 dollar ad-less ‘Plus’ version with 24 hour customer support, Kazaa follows the well worn path from industry bad boy to angel trekked by many including Napster.

For hardcore pirates it will be a sad sight to see the former file sharing network roll over and play ball with the likes of the MPAA and RIAA but when you’re forced to pay £53m in damages it’s enough to convert most people to the straight and narrow. Especially considering the entire legitimate downloads market in Europe is only worth about £100m! Still, when you once managed four million simultaneous users at any one time and had your software downloaded 239m times you must expect to get it in the neck…
