Sky Hops On 'Free Broadband' Revolution

Sky is jumping on the ‘free broadband’ revolution. After Carphone Warehouse kicked things off in April, Orange soon followed and now Murdock’s boys are in on the act.

Today it announced three packages which are available to existing Sky subscribers: Sky Broadband Base, Mid and Max. It has also relaunched phone service Sky Talk.
Free to all Sky customers is Sky Broadband Base which provides a 2Mbps connection, up to 2GB of monthly usage, a free wireless router and 12 months McAfee Security support. The hidden charges are a £40 connection (which is actually paid to BT), optional home installation (£50) and obviously a BT land line.
Moving up the food chain you’ll come to Sky Broadband Mid which provides an 8Mbps connection with 40GB monthly allowance and reduced connection free of £20 along with all the benefits of the Base pack for just £5 per month. While at the top of the tree is Sky Broadband Max a zippy 16Mbps connection with unlimited monthly allowance (subject to the usual ‘Fair Usage policy’ naturally), free connection and home installation for just a tenner per month.
If you don’t have a satellite dish and have no intention of getting one then Sky Broadband Connect is an independent offering identical to the Mid package (apart from a £40 connection fee) which costs £17 per month. All accounts come with @sky.com email addresses and a personalised online Sky portal which can store address books, files, a customised programme guide and provides access to Sky Remote Record.
A further sweetener to all this is the aforementioned Sky Talk. The rejuvenated phone service offers free landline calls 24 hours a day to all Sky subscribers for just £5 per month.
Naturally the catch in all this is the prerequisite subscription to Sky if you want to see the best rates. Of course the alternative is a life where ITV makes up 20 per cent of your channel options but that is not an existence I like to contemplate without suitably strong tranquilizers and a large bottle of Vodka.
