Dell Flogs Own Internal Draft 802.11n Cards

Despite the ongoing confusion surrounding the failed Draft 802.11n standard an ever growing number of manufacturers are releasing kit based on it. Buffalo, D-Link, and Netgear have so far all done so with varying degrees of success but now an unlikely fat cat has thrown its hat into the ring: Dell.

The world renowned producer of PCs-in-any-colour-so-long-as-it’s-grey has announced it will soon begin selling an internal wireless mini card capable of supporting the current next gen (non) draft. It promises the ‘Dell Wireless 1500 Draft 802.11n’ will have maximum data rates of up to 270Mbps which naturally compares very favourably with the 54Mbps theoretical top end of current g kit.

Like all the Draft N hardware out there the 1500 will also be backwards compatible with existing 802.11a/b/g wireless standards and boasts an increased (though unspecified) range. An upgraded version of Dell’s Network Assistant will ship with the card enabling users to set up, maintain and troubleshot the product.

At just $59 the 1500 represents a real price coup and is available immediately. It also means that when if the failed Draft doesn’t work with the final standard you won’t lose much sleep. That is unless you’re really tight… or Scottish.
