Netgear Skype Mobile Phone Arrives

In an announcement which perfectly illustrates why BT’s Fusion service (reviewed today) is indeed rather irrelevant, Netgear has just released pricing for the world’s first dedicated WiFi phone for Skype.

Called the SPH101, it can make calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world, anytime you have WiFi access, without a PC. Its navigation system uses Skype-styled menus and icons and you will have access to your full contact list showing who is and isn’t online. Calls to ordinary phones are supported too using the Skype-Out system for just pennies per minute globally (full price list here) and there are no monthly contracts.
Talk time is rated at a hefty three hours and lasts up to 50 hours on standby. It is 802.11g compliant (rather than the older 802.11b standard we see installed on many mobile devices) and supports WEP and WPA-PSK encryption security. The SPH101 goes on sale in July priced $249.99 and you can bet it is giving telcos nightmares as we speak…
