18 months on and I’m still rather happy with my laptop so I won’t be changing it until all the features I want are available. That said these are troubling times for my wallet because that day just edged a little closer.

Asus, in conjunction with Airgo, has announced the first laptop that will take advantage of all the Draft 802.11n spec routers we’ve seen doing the rounds lately. The A6T features an integrated Airgo True MIMO card which the companies claim will provide a theoretical data throughput of almost 240Mbps and a consistent stream at 120Mbps - that’s faster than a wired 10/100 Ethernet connection! Furthermore, it will be backwards compatible will previous 802.11g and 802.11b equipment.

In appealing to that curious beast known as the ‘early adopter’ Asus has also revealed that the laptop will feature an AMD Turion 64 X2 processor of unspecified speed. Sadly, it chose to keep its lips sealed on the rest (including a price and release date) though in describing the machine as a ‘road warrior’ I think it is safe to assume the A6T won’t weigh a tonne and should have decent battery life.

Interestingly, unlike all draft N spec equipment Airgo claims the usual caveats don't apply to its True MIMO technology. It is merely a super fast way of receiving wireless information regardless of how it is broadcast and so consequently it doesn't rely on one particular standard specification or another. Oh and for the record, my new machine needs: 802.11n (final spec), a quad core CPU, integrated 3G, a 1920 x 1200 resolution, a minimum of six hours battery life and will tilt the scales no more than 3Kg. Yup, it is actually getting closer…
