100Mbps Bluetooth In 2007

Bluetooth oh Bluetooth how you frustrate me so. You took years to arrive, generations to be implemented properly, and still refuse to work over longer distances or concede to WiFi. You do keep getting faster, though…

The latest revision announced by the Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) is to incorporate Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology to boost data transmission rates up to a maximum of 100Mbps. Naturally – being Bluetooth – this only happens at proximities of under 10 feet and the connection will still be limited to distances up to 10 or 15m. That said, the latest version will be backwards compatible with existing Bluetooth standards, remain a low power drain and have inbuilt ad-hoc networking and security features.

A Q2 2007 release date has been mooted but – again, being Bluetooth – I’d take that with a pinch of salt. What interests me most however will be what awaits this new version of Bluetooth once it hits the market. Wireless USB (WUSB) should hopefully be in full swing and we can always sacrifice Spode to the gods in hope of 802.11n making an appearance. Actually we might need to offer up Benny too for that to happen. Be worth it though…
