Be Customers Get 2.5Mbps Upstream

Internet download speeds have undergone an exponential increase in recent years but by sad contrast the amount of bandwidth dedicated to upload speeds has hardly changed. Thankfully, Be has decided to do something about that.

The country’s first ADSL2+ provider has announced the conclusion of its ‘Annex M’ trials with a cross section of its members and the result is a theoretical upstream increase to 2.5Mbps. That is a 60 per cent boast on current Be speeds and 10x faster than traditional ADSL connections.

The new data rates will be rolled out across the company’s user base at no extra cost and will be a welcome arrival given the blossoming interest in photographic blogs on sites like Flicker and profile sites such as Orkut. All of which necessitate the regular uploading of additional content.

The Be network now covers 1.52m lines, 44.4 per cent of that still lies within the M25 but it has major plans for further national roll out and we can only hope the ISP’s moves today prompts similar action from its competitors. The Internet is a two way street these days with many users just as concerned with how fast content can be put onto the web as pulled from it.
