'City of London' Gets Blanket WiFi

Not to be confused with the city of London, ‘The City of London’ (if you’re a fellow dweller you’ll know what we mean) is about to get blanket WiFi coverage.

Undertaken by ambitious networking company The Cloud, which recently announced plans to also cover Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham, Oxford, Cambridge and three London boroughs: Islington, Kensington and Camden, the project estimates completion within just a few months.

For those of you still struggling with the ‘The City of London’ part we’re sympathetic. It defines the financial and business centre of our smoky capital also referred to as London’s Square Mile. Air lights coming on? If not, you clearly don’t live in London so shouldn’t care ;)

When finished the blanket network will allow any ISP to use it and there will be no limitations in of the connection so offering users high speed Internet access, the ability to download multimedia content and run VoIP software like Skype.

Michael Snyder, chairman of the City of London’s Policy Committee said something rather by the numbers and used political language. George Polk, big cheese at Cloud, was rather more solid saying it estimates 350,000 plus people will benefit for the coverage also adding that “the network is designed to support secure access and private data networks for the emergency services and other public services customers in the City of London such as transport authorities.” Which is actually a little scary if its routers are anything like the last few I’ve owned?

Costs for using the service will be decided by the individual ISPs who sign up and with the speedy projected completion date you can bet you’ll be hearing plenty about whose those are over in the next few weeks…
