Skype is unbelievably popular. Just looking the edition running on my notebook it tells me 4,406,600 users are online which is an even larger number than the instant messenger contact lists of some of my Brazilian friends. Top banana then that the company’s finally updated its Pocket PC edition.

Interestingly, two new variants are available too: PC Beta version 1.2.0.89 and Skype for Pocket PC low CPU Beta version 1.2.0.91. As the name suggests the latter is a rather nifty addition to the current options as it caters for less powerful devices (under 400MHz to be precise). That said, Skype still advises users have an external WLAN card if the kit in your pocket runs at under 300MHz and it is unknown how smartphones, which have tended to run at around 200MHz, will respond.

Besides the reduced power edition, both versions now feature full Windows Mobile 5.0 compatibility along with improved an appearance in landscape mode and they cater for 480 x 480 and 240 x 240 resolution displays. Call forwarding is also newly supported and finally a mini one this, but language selection is now automatically based on the regional settings of the device.

4,409,494 users online, 4,512,901 users online, 4,515,855 users online…
