The Skype phenomenon just keeps rolling. After September’s block busting $2.6bn takeover by eBay, the firm has released a new and highly improved version of its supremely popular software.

The killer feature of Skype 2.0 is “Skype Video” which allows users to see one another provided you own a webcam. This potentially horrifying (that’s father calling and I'm not out of bed) or extremely pleasing (that’s my girlfriend calling and I'm in bed) video can be displayed either in a window or full screen. Like the voice software it remains free when used from computer to computer.

On top of this heading aspect are a Skype toolbar for Microsoft Outlook which provides one click calling to contacts stored in its address book, a redesigned and simplified user interface, status emoticons, real time contact search, contact groups and greater levels of personalisation via avatars and custom ring tones.

Available in no less than 27 languages, you’d be daft to miss it and – to modify a famous tagline – It’s Good To Talk For Free!
