It has been on the burner for a while, but British ISP UK Online has finally launched its ADSL2+ service for £29.99 per month.

First announced at the start of September, the 22Mbps quicksilver connection will be immediately available to as many as 4.4m homes (18 per cent of the population). UK Online says it hopes to expand this coverage to 5.8m within the next 12 months.

Even more of a kicker is the company’s speed claims. So far ISPs have been incredibly cautious about how quickly ADSL2+ lines will run in the early days since the technology is heavily dependant on user distance from their local exchange. By contrast, UK Online says some of its customers will receive connections at up to 24Mbps, though – in truth – when you have this level of broadband it is a little akin to Bill Gates throwing a party over an extra couple of million hitting his bank account. What is probably more celebratory is the upstream speed of 768Kbps, which should prove a real boon to ftp fans and those of you who regularly upload data to the net.

Now despite these bold speed claims, UK Online provides all potential customers with a “pragmatic estimate” of the speed their lines will support before they sign on the dotted line. Can’t say fairer than that?

Check out the link below if UK Online’s ADSL2+ service tickles you, and – to be frank – if it doesn’t you must be seriously desensitised.
