The race to be first in the world of IT is a little like the 100m sprint. There almost no time between them all, yet great importance is placed on being first. Newbie Be Unlimited picked up the gold launching its ADSL2+ (24Mbps) lines yesterday, now UK Online takes a creditable silver today.

Not that 24 hours, or even a few weeks really matter to the consumer. We just want the best price/service combination and as little need to call technical support as possible. With this in mind, it would appear Be will leave us with thicker wallets since its unbelievably cheap £20 per month rates look set to be a few quid less than UK Online’s charges (so far only described as “under £30”).

What does go in UK Online’s favour, however, is its established name which may help the more nervous among us sleep better at night. This is not to damn Be, simply we don’t know what to expect from it yet. In addition, UK Online has said its lines (unbundled courtesy of EasyNet) will not be limited to London dwellers only, so expect some coverage in the bigger cities outside our capital as well.

UK Online ADSL2+ registration forms can be found here, and everything should go live by the start of October.

Incidentally, sources tell us to expect much maligned ISP Bulldog to grab the final podium position with a 20Mbps ADSL2+ service within the next week. After this, expect the floodgates to open.
