We were excited the first time we wrote Be Unlimited, cock-a-hoop the second and we’re absolutely dolally now.

This is because we have just received news that Be Unlimited’s ADSL2+ service is launching in London this week. It promises speeds of up to 24Mbps downstream, 1Mbps upstream and, in one of the largest pilot schemes we have seen, it will encapsulate – more or less – the whole of our capital city. The monthly price will be a ridiculously low £20 and the month of September will be free. On top of this, every customer will get a “Be Box” (Thomson SpeedTouch 716g wireless router) thrown in.

"We are hoping to build a very special community of pilot members," said Dana Pressman, the understandably smug Big Cheese of Be. "For anyone interested in new technology and the fastest speeds, this will be a must have product."

We have to agree, and the fact that Be spent time building a completely new ADSL2+ network (using Alcatel equipment) to get its service ready independently and on time deserves kudos. All Londoners will need to join the pilot is a BT telephone line and a little good fortune to be near one of the many exchanges in The Smoke where Be got busy with its kit. Check out the pilot scheme (and Be’s rather worrying obsession with the elderly) and the company will answer this million dollar question.

We always knew there was one good reason why we pay such stupidly high rents…
