BT Conjures Fixed/Mobile Phone "Fusion"

Landlines and mobiles are about as natural a combination as tea and milk (I am English!). So it’s great to see BT has finally confused a mobile into thinking it is both, though sadly a few caveats remain.

The schizophrenic device, a modified Motorola V560 (below), works on a geographical basis. This means when you are out and about it believes itself to be an ordinary mobile, but walk into the house and it undergoes a radical personality change to act just like a line land. A little like the change we all go through once we step inside our front doors…

Naturally, the call rates automatically adjust depending where you are and at home uses BT standard charges (5.5p per hour off-peak, 3p per minute on peak). What is pretty cool is that this change can even happen mid-call as you walk into the house. The key to the whole process is the BT Hub (see above, complete with T100 glowing red eye), a Bluetooth access point installed in the home which doubles as a wireless router and facilitates the swap over.

The caveats: well, you need a BT line for one, a BT Broadband account for another and you’ll have to abandon whatever mobile you use for the V560 too. If you can meet these factors then Bob’s your uncle (it’s a very strange English phrase – any readers know its origin?).

The BT Fusion scheme is currently trialling with roughly 400 customers, with a full roll out to begin in September. Currently two packages are available: BT Fusion 100 and 200, offering 100/200 minutes cross network, anytime inclusive minutes at £9.99 and £14.99 per month respectively. These are liable to change.
