In September last year Cable and Wireless said it would spend £100m to LLU enable 400 exchanges for its Bulldog DSL and telephony services. It set a deadline of 18 months to complete that and managed it seven months ahead of schedule. A new target has now been set of 800 exchanges, and a raft of fresh services look set to follow.

C&W has set itself the same 18 month deadline to get to 800 exchanges as it did to 400 (sounds like Moore’s Law for surfing to us). The announcement is certainly good news for the consumer as it means increased competition in the UK Telecoms market (something regulator Ofcom has been preaching for years).

On the back of these expansions, Bulldog is set to introduce some new services, including a mooted SOHO broadband product this month which will provide 8 VoIP lines, data and fast Internet access (currently speeds top out at 4Mbps).

The moves suggest C&W has big plans for Bulldog (which was, on its own, the first company to offer 4Mbps consumer broadband and was setup in 2000). Bulldog was bought by C&W in May 2004 and in March this year it slashed the costs of its services. This policy is ready to step up a gear, watch this space…

Update:
That didn't take long! Bulldog has announced it will start supplying 8Mbps broadband. The company says it will be able to supply these speeds to almost one third of the homes across the UK and prices begin at a super low £15.50 per month. If you want no caps fun the cost is still incredibly reasonable at £29.50.

Sign on before 15th June and you'll get the first month free and the second month half price. This Bulldog's got some bite alright!
