D-Link Upgrades To Next Gen Wi-Fi Security Standard

D-Link has announced that it is upgrading its products to support the new security standard, WPA2. WPA2 is based on the 802.11i standard and offers a higher level of security than its predecessor WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access). The main difference between WPA2 and WPA lies in the encryption system. WPA2 uses Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), i.e. a block cipher instead of a stream cipher, which increases security substantially.

"WPA2 delivers a level of security that compares favourably to that of traditional wired networks," says Tahira Perveen, Country Sales Manager, D-Link UK and Ireland. After upgrading to WPA2, the most security-conscious companies will be able to feel confident that the information in their wireless networks is only accessible to authorised users.

The WPA2 upgrade will initially be aimed at corporate environments that use a RADIUS server. WPA2 obtains its login information from the RADIUS server.

In early 2005, D-Link plans to launch WPA2 software upgrades for the following products:

• DWL-G520
• DWL-G520+
• DWL-G650
• DWL-G650+
• DWL-2000AP+
• DWL-2100AP
• DI-624
• DI-624+
• DWL-G132 (forthcoming product)

Several more products, both existing and new, will then be upgraded in a later phase.
