Mercury Networking Rises from the East

Those looking to buy new wireless equipement now have another brand to consider with the announcement that Mercury networking gear is now available in the UK. Mercury is part of the Kobian Group and has factories in India and China. The company is well known in those areas and has already extended its Mercury brand into the US retail market. Now it’s the turn of the UK.

There are three products available, an access point (WL560), a wireless PCI card (WL530), and a wireless CadrBus Type II card (WL540). These all operate at standard 802.11g speeds, providing wireless data transfers of up to 54Mbps.

The WL560 Access Point provides an Ethernet to wireless bridge, so you can provide wirelessly connectivity to an existing wired network. This will cost £47. The WL540 wireless PCMCIA card is a standard 32-bit card that will slot into any notebook with drivers supplied for Windows 98 (SE), 2000, ME and XP. This will set you back £29.38. The WL540 uses a standard PCI interface so you can make any desktop PC wireless. It also comes with drives for Windows 98 (SE), 2000, ME and XP and costs £25.85.

Security is provided through adherence to the Wireless Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption/decryption and the WiFi Protected Access (WPA) standards. You can pick up Mercury products from online retailsers such as www.microlandtechnology.com.
