All the included connectivity options are impressive, but what is even more impressive is that Kiss supplies a SCART cable, a composite video cable and a stereo audio cable in the box with the player. You also get a CD with the Kiss PC Link software, a remote control with batteries and a manual in the box. I would however advise you to download the latest version of the PC Link software from the Kiss website instead of using the one supplied on the CD as many new features and software updates have been added.
The manual is fairly basic, but it covers what you need to know to get the DP-500 up and running, but a little technical know how won’t hurt. One other thing worth mentioning is that the outputs on the DP-500 are set in the menu during the first installation, but this can later be changed in the setup if your AV configuration changes. This can be a bit confusing if you don’t realise this and it was something I experienced while I was testing the DP-500 as I moved it from a TV to a projector and lost the sound. This was due to the fact that I had previously set it up to use the optical S/PDIF output and now wanted to use the stereo audio with the built in speakers in the projector.
The remote control has to be one of the most generic remote controls around and as it happens I own a third party programmable remote control that looks just like it. This is not a bad thing in itself, as the remote sits snugly in your hand and most buttons are easy to reach. It does however mean that some buttons have been allocated odd physical locations, but this is common on many DVD players.
It’s also easy to navigate the on screen menu system of the DP-500 with the remote and most of the options are pretty straight forward. There is a setup menu where all the player settings can be changed and a menu for the network functions.
This is where the DP-500 comes into its own and really shows what it’s capable of. The Kiss PC Link software is the key here and once installed it gives you a basic user interface with a selection of tabs. The first tab is Audio and this is where you place your MP3 tracks, the next one is Video and this is where all your video files go and the same goes for the third tab which is Pictures, where of course you put your still images. The Info tab is somewhat different as this is where the setup options live, although this is very basic, consisting of the language you want to use and the name of the server. The rest of the information concerns the IP address of your network card and what Kiss devices are connected to it.
