So it's IFA time again...

A little backgrounder: IFA, or 'Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin' to use its full name (which we will never do ever again), has been running since 1926, rivals CeBIT for size and in recent years is widely considered to be far more important and relevant. The show is spread over 27 gargantuan halls and this year it will host approximately 900 manufacturers. This includes the likes of Samsung, Philips, Lenovo, Sharp, Toshiba, Acer, Dolby, Casio, Creative, LG, Nikon, Nintendo, Panasonic, Nokia, SanDisk, Sony Ericsson, TomTom, Vodafone and many, many more. Apple doesn't attend, but then again it doesn't attend anything it doesn't host.

What can we expect this year? I suspect 3D will be one of the biggest talking points, particularly with Sony so keen to push the technology into the high end consumer space before the end of 2010. OLED will again be a talking point with manufacturers finally looking to discuss TV sizes larger than your average picture frame and real world availability. Projectors may also look to make a renewed bid to get into your home cinema good books while Blu-ray recorders should be all the rage too, with prices now falling faster than your average Chris Brown concert attendance.

Of course we can't forget netbooks either. Virtually everyone has a netbook to push these days and longer battery life, higher resolutions and HD capable graphics (ION-based or not) will be the order of the day. Expect some chatter about Windows 7 centric new laptops and desktops, faster and cheaper SSDs and sight of the first Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphones.

IFA itself runs from 4 - 9 September, but press only conferences will be held by a lot of companies today so I'll look to bring you coverage as fast as my fingers (and dodgy press room WiFi) will let me. Andy joins me at the Berlin battleground from Thursday as well, so It should make for an exciting week...
