TrustedReviews NewslettersSonos promised a redesigned and updated remote control was on its way when it launched the Sonos Controller for iPhone and, lo and behold, the first 'real life' image of that controller, the CR200, has been grabbed by Automated Home, claiming the device itself should be available "almost immediately.
The major change is immediately evident, the CR200's screen now dominating its front betraying its status as the primary method of control; the scroll-wheel of old banished. The interface looks pretty similar to that on the iPhone/iPod touch application and will apparently feature an on-screen keyboard for searching and other such functions.
There are a couple of buttons to complement the touch-sensitive screen. Specifically, dedicated buttons are provided for volume controls (including a mute button) and what looks like a 'home' control. Not that we're critical of such concessions - there are still times when a physical button is more practical than a touchscreen - trying to turn down your music to answer a phone call, say.
According to Automated Home the docking cradle (pictured) is bundled with the remote, which is good. The ZP120 and ZP80 zone players will be getting a re-colouring to match the new remote's tone and a new bundle, called the BU250, will be offered including the new remote - although it will remain otherwise identical to the awesome BU150 package.
Pricing is sadly not mentioned; we can but hope the CR200 won't be as insanely pricing as the £280-odd CR100 it replaces.

After all an iPod touch also plays music and can access such applications such as Last.fm ;)

Hmm, I'm still a big fan of the Squeezebox. Open source, lots of plugins, and a bunch of ipod control options (I use the iPeng app in addition to a squeezzebox Controller). ... more

Not quite sure why anyone would now buy a CR100 rather than a much cheaper, slicker and more capable iPod Touch to control their Sonos. I can see the CR200 being irrelevant before... more
