Pure has been a regular awards winner and favourite at TR central so we're big fans of upgrade time...

The 'EVOKE-2S' is Pure's follow up to its popular EVOKE-2XT (yes those endings are starting to sound like graphics cards) and an enticing "comprehensive overhaul" is said to be have been undertaken. So what's the what?

Keymost on the agenda for the 2S - as you'd hope - is sound quality. Described as Pure's "best sounding portable radio yet" (some praise) it offers improved mid-range speakers and separate tweeters all driven by 'Clearsound' technology.

Clearsound is a brand spanking new digital end-to-end subsystem consisting of an integrated high-performance switch-mode power supply, high quality Class D amplifiers, digital audio shaping technology and custom-tuned speakers all of which churn out audio at up to a proportionately heavyweight 30W .

Outside of this the 'ReVu' time shifting tech is in there meaning pausing and rewinding live DAB radio is on the agenda along with staples Intellitext and textSCAN, additional presets, a sleep timer, extra alarms, an OLED display with manual and automatic brightness control and USB upgradability plus all important line-in audio for connecting virtually any audio device (iPods included). A bundled ChargePAK rechargeable battery will also provide over 20 hours operation on a single charge, which should do most listeners for up to a week at a time.

Launching any minute with an RRP of £169.99 the PURE EVOKE-2S perhaps unsurprisingly doesn't come cheap but, if you're a purest (pun most definitely intended), this looks to be a price well worth paying...
