When Riyad looked at the Sonos BU150 both Riyad and myself couldn't help but wonder why there wasn't an iPhone app available yet - it seemed such an obvious fit. Today we're feeling pretty pleased because that's exactly what Sonos is launching, alongside a firmware update for its players.

It may have taken Sonos a while to get its iPhone controller out, but the wait has definitely been worth it. The Sonos controller for iPhone app enables any iPhone or iPod touch to be used as a fully fledged Sonos controller. The only major functionality it lacks (which I'm told will come in the next version) is the ability to set up a Sonos configuration form scratch - currently initial setup still requires a PC.

Other than that, though, it's fully possible to browse NAS music libraries, stream music from internet radio or Napster. Zones can be managed individually or merged together as per the Cr100 controller or desktop software. Basically, if you think you should be able to do something with your Sonos system via the iPhone app, you probably can. And it looks brilliant to boot.

In fact, in some ways Sonos is cutting away at its own market a little as a £169 iPod touch with the Sonos controller for iPhone is not only amost £100 cheaper than Sonos' own controller, but does as good a job (with a few caveats as mentioned) and, if you ask me, is slicker too.

As well as the new controller application, Sonos is also rolling out an update for its players, adding Last.FM streaming as well as some 11,000 new Internet radio stations.

Best of all there's no charge for either of these new additions - way to go Sonos!
