Sonos Announces Zone Player 120, Zone Player 90

Judging by our reviews, if you were looking for the definitive player in the music streaming arena, Sonos is probably it. The last piece of kit we looked at, the ZP80, back in mid-2006 walked away with a recommended award, falling down slightly only based on its internal amplifier - which you could bypass anyway should you so desire. But that was then and this is now and Sonos has a new set of kit up for grabs.

Up first we have the Sonos Zone Player 90 (ZP90) and Zone Player 120 (ZP120), the latter differentiated by packing a built-in amplifier. Both of these receivers sport Sonos' SonosNet 2.0, the latest iteration of the company's wireless tech, which uses a MiMo system to ensure good connectivity, also using AES encryption to ensure no-one else can access the network.

Format support is fantastic, with MP3, WMA (including DRMed files), AAC, Ogg, Apple Lossless, FLAC, AIFF and WAV files all able to be played. The players will stream from Vista, XP and Mac OSX (10.4 and 10.5), as well as NAS boxes - such as the Buffalo LinkStation Mini, for example. Both ZPs also sport a pair of Ethernet ports, allowing other devices to piggyback on the Sonos wireless network.

As if that wasn't enough, the Sonos Software that drives the whole lot has been updated too. It now supports larger repositories of music, up to 65k tracks to be precise, and ads NasBasic support, extending the number of NAS devices the players can connect to.

The ZP120 and ZP90 are priced at £349 and £249 by themselves, but Sonos offers a bundle called (rather originally) the Sonos bundle 150 which packs a ZP120, a ZP90 and the CR100 wireless colour screen remote control for a (relatively) more reasonable £699, or £830 if you want a pair of Sonos speakers with that lot.
