SlySoft has a real knack - doesn't it...

13 months on from decrypting HD DVD and one year on from giving Blu-ray the same treatment SlySoft has announced that it has now toppled the next gen winner's latest and supposedly greatest copy protection: BD+.

AnyDVD HD v6.4.0.0 was released by the company last week - free to existing subscribers - which, in the company's own words, "Removes BD+ copy protection from Blu-ray Discs". The software works by detecting and opening up a disc the moment it is inserted into an optical drive, it then nullifies the copy protection along with any chosen user options (skip splash screen/warnings, etc) and then offers it up to Windows.

BD+ had been introduced in June last year after AACS was circumvented with minimal trouble and while BD+ did survive a great deal longer than its predecessor the breakthrough was inevitable, as was its source.

For the record, the full release notes for the update are:

  • New (Blu-ray): Removes the BD+ protection from Blu-ray discs! (for increased compatibility with titles released by Twentieth Century Fox :-) )
  • New (Blu-ray): Added option to enable / disable BD+ removal
  • New (DVD): AnyDVD ripper no longer uses the Windows filesystem, it has now its own UDF parser / reader.
  • Discs which cannot be read by Windows can now be copied with the AnyDVD ripper.
  • Fix (Blu-ray): Black display with some BD discs, e.g., "Layer Cake", second release, "The Fugitive", "Wild Things" (all Region B)
  • Fix (DVD): Small bugfix in "repairing defective disc structure" function of AnyDVD ripper
  • Fix (DVD): Problems with some Arccos protected titles, e.g. "The Grudge", R1, US
  • Some minor fixes and improvements
  • Updated languages

For first time buyers, AnyDVD retails for €49 with the HD option an additional €30. It isn't cheap but a limited time promotion for Easter is currently discounting the total cost 20 per cent to €63.20 so there's no better time to spend some of that choccy egg money...
