Soho - as it so often the case - was the backdrop today for an important technological launch: Archos TV+.

Designed as a direct rival to Apple's struggling (though recently rejuvenated) Apple TV, Archos' Archos TV+ (are we spotting a trend?) made its long awaited public appearance.

In truth little has changed from the preview I gave you in January, but the compact (250 x 164 x 37mm, 1.29Kg) and stylish box certainly looks set to cause something of a stir. Coming in at £179.99 for the 80GB edition and £249.99 for the monstrous 250GBer, the Archos TV+ immediately makes a mockery of the £199.99 and £269.99 Apple charges for its 40GB and 160GB offerings.

On top of the financial benefits, the WiFi and Ethernet sporting device not only streams and stores audio, video and pictures from your PC, but streams and syncs content directly from Archos Generation 3, 4 and 5 Series players and works directly with a TV to schedule recordings - three birds, one box.

Codecs and connectivity support reads like a who's who as well with H.264, Mpeg2, WMV, AAC and MP3 and HDMI, SPDIF, USB, S-Video, Composite and the aforementioned WiFi and Ethernet. Sadly, in typical Archos style, a number of these codecs have to be purchased for a one-off additional fee of £19.99, but this does also bring with it a web browser for true armchair surfing.

Archos TV+ will go on sale before the end of the month and we'll have a review up shortly. Tempted? You should be...
