You may remember Joost, the latest project from the founders of Kazaa and Skype. Well, now anyone can try it out...

Today the streaming TV software has officially emerged from nine months of betas and launched v1.0 - simultaneously abolishing the need for a third party invite.

That makes for a highly enticing situation too since Joost is free (via supported advertising) and now features more than 250 channels - 100 of which were added in the last few months as its momentum appears to be snowballing. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Joost lets its users build their own channels and I'm sure we're just a few months away from seeing yet another irritatingly ambitious teenager signed up to a Warner/EMI/Fox megadeal.

Joost isn't a one-trick pony though, it has integrated Gmail and Jabber compatible instant messaging and released an SDK for what is fast becoming a lorry load of third party widgets.

Joost 1.0 is out now and runs on both Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X platforms, though - perhaps surprisingly given its open-ended nature - not Linux. That aside there is absolutely no good reason not to try it out, so click on the link below immediately... (and apologies to those of you at work whom I'm about to get fired).
