It does indeed seem that the CD has left the building or, perhaps more precisely, been restricted to it...

Following Benny's acute editorial, Alpine's stunning iDA-X001 iPod head unit and Parrot's potentially even better RK8200 it appears that Blaupunkt has also been persuaded to dump the venerable CD.

The linguistically challenging company has announced the 'Melbourne SD27' - it's first head unit to omit the CD completely. Instead the company uses the extra retail space this affords to install a larger display and two generously sized navigation wheels. As for playback itself that is handled either directly from an SD card (note the slot on the right hand side) with support for MP3 and WMA or via the auxiliary-in port which makes it iPod/MP3 player friendly.

Furthermore, like a number of the higher-end head units on the market today, the SD27 also comes equipped with Bluetooth for MP3 audio streaming and hands-free voice calling. Naturally enough a radio tuner is installed too and handles the virtually forgotten MW and LW bands along with FM. For the head bangers amongst you (Ed?) the quoted 4 x 45W maximum output should do justice to whatever angst ridden/anger filled/you-should've-grown-out-of-it-as-a-teenager tracks by bands-named-in-poor-taste you care to think of.

Perhaps best of all however is the quite frankly bargain £79.99 RRP. Available immediately (and with some retailers cutting it to under £60) the SD27 really should be the top of the list for those still stuck in auto acoustic yesteryear...
