Since its introduction nearly a year ago the Sling Media Slingbox has impressed everyone including us, but it had one fatal flaw: it didn't play nice with anything other than Windows.

That has all changed now however as Sling Media has announced Slingbox Mac drivers are now out of beta and available to download for free on its website. Both PowerPC and Intel based Macs are supported by version 1.0 as long as they are running OS X 10.3.9 or later.

Happily compatibility across Mac programmes and peripherals is also equally comprehensive working with Apple TV, Front Row and an iPod in either Apple's Universal Doc or in an iPod Hi-Fi. As before cable, DVR and DVD content is available too.

"We have long admired the elegance, simplicity and visual appeal of the Mac OS and Apple's innovation in general,” said Blake Krikorian, Sling Media's CEO, Chairman & Co-founder (impressive name, even more impressive titles). "It was important for us to capture that overall appeal and familiarity with SlingPlayer for Mac. In fact, we turned to the Mac community, through our private and public betas... It was this feedback that was instrumental in being able to present the Mac community with a quality television experience on their platform of choice."

Now I can't imagine why you would own a Slingbox already when you use a Mac, but if you've been waiting to cross sides here's one less obstacle in your way. Just remember to take those "I'm a Mac" ads with a lorry-load of salt.
