Pictures of this particularly odd looking device started appearing on the web late last week and now we know what it is.

The 'Sansa Shaker' is made by SanDisk and marks a radical shift (or at least temporary deviation) from the regular black and rectangular styling seen in the e200 series, c100 series, View, Express and Connect.

As well as looking like a baby's squeaker the Shaker is actually a budget MP3 player with dual headphone jacks, integrated speaker, 512MB of memory, an SD card slot for future expansion and it runs off just one AAA battery. Play/pause is handled via the blue ringed button at the base of the device, while volume and track control comes from simply twisting the white bands at the top and bottom. The Shaker can also be 'shaken' to skip to the next track... ahhhh.

The Shaker clearly targets a (very) young audience and will cost just $40 when it launches in the US later this month so won't be mean.

A global release will follow later this year but it remains to be seen whether anyone goes goo-goo gaga over it...

Update: We've just heard from SanDisk's official UK PR that the Shaker won't be coming to the UK. I doubt many - besides the obvious - will shed a lot of tears.
