With doubts being raised about the iPhone, the legality of iTunes DRM and even the slow development of the iPod line itself one thing remains clear: iPods remain amazingly popular.

This week Apple announced that the 100 millionth iPod was sold making them the fastest selling music players in history.

“At this historic milestone, we want to thank music lovers everywhere for making iPod such an incredible success”, said a jubilant Steve Jobs. “iPod has helped millions of people around the world rekindle their passion for music, and we’re thrilled to be a part of that”.

I've censored further sound bites from Mary J Blige, John Mayer and Lance Armstrong since they were so irritatingly saccharine I'll be off to the dentist later.

High fiving apart however the player has seen a remarkable life since its launch in November 2001 with 10 models including five generations of iPod and two generations apiece of mini, nano and shuffle. Speculation also remains rife about future innovations to the lines with touch screen technology, wireless connectivity and an FM tuner all mooted.

The likes of SanDisk, Sony, Creative, iRiver and Meizu - to name but a few - would all love to stop the iPod reaching 200m sales but its biggest challenge ahead isn't likely to be a rival brand, but rather convergence.
