Little news has flowed from iRiver over the last six months but its latest new players have splashed down and should lead to a torrent of interest (sorry, couldn't resist).

Slap bang in iPod nano and shuffle territory are the X20 and S10 respectively. Both are flash based models with the former (pictured left) capable not just of playing audio – MP3, WMA, Ogg – but also showing pictures and video on its 2.2in QVGA LCD. An integrated FM tuner is also on the X20's hit list and it can match the nano with 2GB, 4GB and 8GB versions. Perhaps most impressive about this head liner however is its battery life with iRiver quoting 22 hours audio playback and a superb six hours for video.

As for the S10, it is a more simple but no less attractive creature measuring just 42 x 30 x 10.8mm and weighing a minuscule 17.5g. Like the X20 it can handle MP3, WMA and the much neglected Ogg, and it stuffs in an FM tuner and displays photos. Unlike the X20 it can't handle video.

1GB and 2GB versions of the S10 will be made available for an Apple worrying £69 and £89, while the X20 is a veritable bargain at £79 for the 2GB edition, £99 for 4GB and £149 for the 8GBer. Little has been done to improve the iPod range over the last 18 months, players like these will surely force Steve Job's hand...
