There has been a lot of buzz about Apple TV, which in essence offers little in the way of media streaming that hasn't been done before. Thing is, it hasn't been done by Apple before and when a company can advertise 'the iPod for your living room' it gets attention.

This attention will now amplify with news that Apple's much delayed gadget has finally begun shipping around the globe.

Now of course the 'iPod for your living room' comment is fanciful, this is a streaming media box which synchronises with iTunes. It sports some tasty features: a 40GB HDD, HDMI and component connectivity, wireless n and analogue and optical audio ports but this is something completely different from the company's ubiquitous player.

In fact, hardware apart, the most important difference between the two comes in terms of content availability since Apple has yet to agree full television and movies distribution deals with Europe. So while iTunes is a great resource for music it won't offer the latest blockbuster or episode of 24/Lost/Desperate Housewives, etc for some time yet. Naturally however – as with the audio side of things – bittorent fans can still have fun aplenty.

Grab the Apple TV now for £199, but unless you're prepared to rip your own content or hop on the p2p bandwagon it's probably best holding off for a while...
