Just over a month ago Apple cheekily told PC owners it should wait to upgrade to Vista. The reason being – despite the operating system being delayed almost two years: the iPod manufacturer hadn't managed to get its software ready in time for release. Now it has, kind of.

With the release of iTunes 7.1 Apple has confirmed the ubiquitous software is now mostly compatible with Windows Vista. In real terms this means Apple (inexcusably) still only 'officially' supports Windows 2000 and XP but confirms earlier issues such as poor animation performance, unreliable synchronisation and crashes in Vista should no longer be a problem.

Apple does, however, proclaim one major caveat: should you disconnect your iPod via the 'Safely Remove Hardware' option in the Windows taskbar it may corrupt your iPod! Instead Apple strongly recommends users choose the 'Eject iPod' option from the iTunes control menu.

Wrong option: corruption. Right option: all ok. Think you can remember that kids?

Apple says it remains aware of additional Vista issues, none of them serious, and as yet there is still no support for the 64bit edition of Windows Vista. For what it's worth, I use Vista and – on occasion – an iPod and I haven't encountered a single problem. I also just rip the iPod out the USB port when I'm done so there...

Incompatibility, incomshamatability.
