If you're one of the (extremely limited) few who has tried Sky's Remote Record for mobile phones (it hasn't been expanded to work on anything beyond Nokias since its July launch) then you'll know it is a pretty fantastic service. Thankfully however it is now coming to a much more accessible medium: the internet.

It has taken a remarkably long time to do so – Remote Record for mobiles Nokia appeared eight months ago – but now all Sky+ and Sky HD customers will be able to schedule recordings on their set top boxes from anywhere in the world and all they will need is an Internet connection.

The service – much like the mobile offering – presents users with an online seven day TV Listings Guide that matches the one found on the boxes themselves and users simply need to login and then click any programme to be presented with a summary and recording option. Sky recommends allowing up to 30 minutes for the message to be passed on to your box but said in reality the instruction should translate in just a few minutes.

The only problem I have with the service is the registration process since it requires you to register using the Interactive Services option on your Sky box, typing your details via the Sky Remote and cranking up its juddering analogue modem connection.

Consequently we have the future of 21st century broadcasting enabled only via the 56k modem. Something we would all (Americans aside) recognise as supremely ironic.
