With Blu-ray discs now supposedly outselling HD DVDs by more than two to one (though I would put that mostly down to the release of the PS3) Sony has shown it is keen to kick on with the announcement of a new slimmer and much cheaper player.

Called the ‘BDP-S300’ it will retail for just $599 – a near 50 per cent saving on the company’s current offering: the $999 BDP-S1 (above). The S300 will also be far smaller and more compact than its older forebear and is described as roughly the same size as a standard DVD player.

Other than the aesthetic changes (official photography has yet to be announced) Sony confirmed the S300 will match the S1 spec for spec – including the option for 1080p output – while it will play audio CDS, something its predecessor can’t.

Of course by the time the S300 hits shelves, apparently by the summer, I’m sure Toshiba will have greatly improved upon the $499 RRP of its first generation HD DVD players though I’d be more interested to know whether one format or the other has a decisive lead by then.

Looks like we’re getting down to the bones of it people. Place your bets...
