Sony’s once iconic Walkman has long since played second fiddle to Apple’s ubiquitous iPod range and while that position is unlikely to change anytime soon, it does at least appear to have finally come up with a worthy challenger to the nano.

Sony orientated news site Atraclife.com has grabbed the scoop on the ‘NW-A800’, a nano slim player which incorporates a much larger (though unspecified) screen, video playback capabilities and rumours of up to 10 hours tele/movie viewing off a single charge.

Like the new-ish nanos the A800 will also be available in a range of colours – black, blue, pink and violet, to be precise – while capacities are expected to range from 2GB to 8GB to compete head on with its adversary. As for pricing, a well educated/blatantly obvious starting point is for it to be directly comparable to the nano’s breakdowns.

Sony itself has yet to officially respond to Atraclife’s scoop but interestingly an A800 shaped outline has appeared on the company’s German site alongside a countdown timer which suggests we should have our answer later today.

Has Sony finally managed to come up with a genuine iPod competitor? Based on a decade of bad form I remain convinced the King of Proprietary will have messed it up somewhere along the line but fingers’ crossed...
