Media Centers (Americanised spelling aside) are getting better and better, here’s the latest great British example (see what I did there?!)...

From Evesham comes the ‘iplayer’ an HD and ipTV capable media center with a digital TV tuner, real-time HD upscaler, time shifting capabilities and HDMI connectivity.

Inbuilt Freeview provides access to over 40 channels and a seven day EPG (electronic programme guide) is provided to help navigate them while allowing recordings to be scheduled as a one-off or daily/weekly recurrences. An 80GB HDD is at the iplayer’s core and should provide about 70 hours of video storage.

Living up to its media center tag also means that the iPlayer can connect to the web, either through a networked PC or directly. From here Evesham’s own ‘TV Max’ facility can browse, compose, send and receive emails and play Podcasts. Should you be sharing the connection through a PC the iplayer can also share videos, music and images from it.

Evesham is also promising the iplayer will receive regular firmware upgrades to add new functionality and has told us the first of which will be ‘Catch UP TV’. CUT (my witty acronym) enables Internet connected users to watch previously aired programmes online without the need for recording and couples with pay-per-view channels like Setanta Sports which will be broadcasting Premiership games every Monday night in 2007.

At just £299 and coming with free delivery from Evesham’s own website, the iplayer shouldn’t be out of reach for any aspiring/mature couch potatoes and it’ll look great under the TV in that dusty gap where your soon-to-be-discarded VHS and DVD players used to sit…
