If there’s one thing that you can guarantee will rub off having Bono around (other than wearing sunglasses indoors) it’s the concept of charity and sure enough Apple is no different.

Launched on Friday afternoon (and consequently falling into the I-don’t-care-what-it-is part of the week) was the 4GB ‘iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED’, Apple’s fancy description for what is simply a red 4GB nano. The Bononian part of it all is that for every purchase Jobs’ crew will give a ‘portion’ of it to the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Now Apple doesn’t state just how much of your hard earned pounds will go to those in need (in the US it is $10 from the $199 purchase price) but considering the (PRODUCT) RED nano retails for the same £129.99 as a standard 4GB nano the company is basically agreeing to take a cut in margin which is always admirable.

Away from the colour and the chaaar-rit-eeee side of things the new nano is identical in every way to the existing crop: same weight (40g), size (90 x 40 x 6.5mm), display (1.5in, 176 x 132 pixels), battery life (24 hours) et al.

In true Apple style, the new red nano goes on sale immediately and I have to admit the paintjob looks rather nice.
