Given my pleasurable experience with the nano battering e260 and the subsequent announcement of the bargain priced e280 I was expecting good things from SanDisk at IFA… and I got it.

Today it announced the c200 series, a budget conscious brother of the e200s which will sell in a 2GB capacity for just £60. As you can see it is far more pocket friendly than the previous m series below it and partly achieves this by discarding the AA battery in favour of a removable, rechargeable custom lithium-ion replacement.

You’ll get 15 hours of continuous playback off the c200 and there is a tidy 4in 128 x 96 colour screen and an expandable microSD memory slot to boot. You’ll get a voice recorder, PlaysForSure support and on test the earphone quality is certainly above average – especially at the price. A 1GB version of the c series will also be available for about £45-50 but the two giger is the sweet spot.

Also sliding into view was the new ‘Sansa Base Station’, a c and e series compatible dock which not only charges the players but can also plug into a home audio system for speaker output. Furthermore the Base Station can be connected to a PC to transfer content and is supplied with a remote control which provides playback control and volume adjustment.

No word on availability or pricing (expect the latter to be particularly aggressive I’m told) but this is perhaps the most fully featured dock I’ve seen…
