Talk of a Microsoft iPod rival has been doing the rounds since March and recently surfaced again last month. Well, as Goldfinger told James Bond, “Once is happenstance,. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action”…

Again it is one of the news heavyweights poking around too with Reuters referencing ‘sources close to the matter’ who claim a wireless digital music and video player will be in stores for Chrimbo. These slack lipped chaps further boast content will be downloadable through an iTunes rivalling piece of software which Microsoft is touting to music labels as we speak.

Even more ambitiously, rumours are abound that Microsoft will go all out for Apple by offering iTunes users free duplication of any movies or music they have already purchased so they don’t feel skittish about swapping over. Such as move would cost Gate’s boys millions but – as it proved with the Xbox 360 – the company is prepared to take significant hits to crash seemingly closed markets.

Of course Microsoft continues to maintain a stony wall of silence during all this rumour spreading but it is clear something is up and right now I’d be prepared to stick my neck out and say there must be a 70 per cent chance that an MS branded player shall be appearing in Santa’s sacks.

Please bear in mind I also consider there to be a 70 per cent chance that I’m going to score the winning goal in a World Cup Final, win the F1 World Championship and retire to my own private island to live a life of eternal bliss by the age of 35…

Update:
A picture has surfaced on the web. Could this be it? Probably not...
