There have been times in my life when I have uttered the phrase ‘Mmmm Box!’ but I never expected it to be in relation to technology. Trust Brits Evesham to go and prove me wrong.

Sold along that old propaganda scare tactic of: What would you do if your HDD failed? All hard disks eventually fail! To which I reply: Yes they do, but not usually until a long time after you’ve upgraded them. The MBox (above) is actually a worthy piece of kit.

Compact and acceptably stylish for our stainless steel and aluminium lifestyles, the MBox stores multimedia files – be it music, photo or video – lets you browse them without a PC and can then stream the audio with the help of its partner in crime: the MBridge )below) to any room in the house.

The MBox has two hard disks installed with one automatically mirroring the other in case of that all terrifying FAILURE! and gathers data either via its own built in network or by hopping on the back of your existing WiFi setup. From here up to five MBridge network music players can be paired with the MBox and plugged into separate speaker systems around the house.

Each is independent of the other so while you’re enjoying something suitably sophisticated like Arcade Fire, you’re not being tortured by your wife’s ongoing obsession with Robbie Williams, your son’s disturbing addiction to 25p (UK currency rates apply here) or your daughter’s cringe worthy homage to Rooster or some other such crap.

There is a high price for entry into this world of acoustic freedom however with the MBox retailing for £599 (with one bundled MBridge) and each additional MBridge unit going for £149, while capacities range from 80 to 500GB. To be honest, it might be easier to just buy everyone 1GB nanos, at least that way they can carry them around and get mugged…
