Apple, King of Fanfare, monochrome styling, feline codenames and cheesy ‘One More Thing…’ banners has abandoned all its usual fluff and just gone ahead and announced a product for a change, which is nice.

The device in question, a 1GB iPod nano, is one we speculated upon back in December and given the phenomenal success of the 2GB and 4GB models since their launch its arrival is hardly a shock.

Despite the drop in capacity (1GB = approx 240 tracks encoded at 128kbps in AAC), the size (90 x 40 x 6.9mm) and weight (42g) remain the same as the other two, as does the potential 14 hours of battery life. A new entry level price of £109 has been placed on its head while the 2GB and 4GB models stay at £139 and £179 respectively. After all the flack Apple has taken over its apparently easily scratched screens the company has also decided to ship the new cheaper Nano with a protective case. Ignore it people, throw it away, just use common sense instead. If that proves too difficult, try this

Perhaps most interesting in this news (as again we theorised previously) is the knock on effect this move has had on Apple’s Shuffle range. The (in my mind, confusingly) uber popular screen-less players have indeed had the price cuts it was obvious would be necessary to continue to separate the two product lines. A 1GB Shuffle now costs just £69 and the 512MB model is reduced to £49.

The 1GB nano is out now, please form your expected orderly queues up and down the length of Regent Street. Try not to bring traffic to (even more of) a standstill.
