Continuing the theme of super simple, but darn handy products is the PocketPower from GEAR4 (previously Podgear): a simple AAA way to boost and recharge the battery life of your MP3 player or USB gadget of choice.

The small Apple-ish styled device holds four AAA batteries (provided in box) which it charges over USB. Any USB charger based gadget can then be plugged into it for a power boost. In the case of the iPod GEAR4 claims an additional eight hours of audio playback.

Just an importantly, should you be caught short away from all USB power sources, the PocketPower can swallow standard AAA batteries and instantly fire up your gizmos, be it an MP3 player, digital camera, mobile phone or more. An LED torch is built into the charger should you found yourself fumbling around in the dark (we’ve all been there!).

At £19.99 including VAT, the PocketPower isn’t super cheap but it is out now and if factor into the price the four bundled AAA batteries which cost an arm and several pairs of legs it’s not too bad. In fact, the only thing I have against the PocketPower is its PointlessJoiningOfWords, but that hardly vilifies it in the IT world, does it…
