The latest fad with electronic devices seems to be sticking them in some sort of protective case. I think it started a few years back with mobile phones when I suddenly noticed the majority of my girl friends had hidden their handsets in tacky mock-leather covers with clear plastic fronts. Unfortunately it has moved on since then with mp3 players, digital cameras and portable games consoles all being smothered within an inch of their lives and I do wish people would stop it (Riyad, you too).

There is a news story coming, but first my rant. You see electronics make rubbish investments, within twelve months you can pick them up for less than half what you paid for them and second hand values are nonexistent. Given that we keep our kit for an average of two years, just who are we trying to keep it all shiny and new for? You don’t cover your shoes in plastic bags so they’ll still look good down the charity shop…

But Gordon, they get damaged, iPods scratch. So what? It’s worth pennies in a few years pristine or not. Besides, these reports are greatly exaggerated. I’ve had a 4th Gen 20GB iPod for well over a year and it has got barely a mark… show some common sense and don’t put your electronic wizardry in the same place as your keys or loose change and you’ll be fine. These things aren’t made of tissue paper, despite what the doom mongers might say. So protective cases: don’t get one; enjoy your device while you have it. But if you do have to get one, get this…

For sheer indulgence I can’t help but smile at the iWood nano. Not for its protective qualities, but because it makes such an outrageous statement. Made by Miniot, they are available in maple, mahogany, pear, wengé (whatever that is?) and walnut. The company is even offering a custom engraving service for both bold designs on the front and personal messages inside.

Prices have yet to be released, but I would imagine they will be on a case by case (no pun intended) basis. Shipping starts from 20 October and what a thoughtful little Christmas gift it would make. Otherwise live a little people, lets you gadgets breathe. They only live a short life…
