Fuel Cell MP3 Players In 2006

Batteries are slowly getting better. Sony claims nine hours off its latest laptop and Fujitsu Siemens boasts users get 12.5 hours from its C1320. Of course this is before we get our hands on them (and I’m sure my friend Mr. MobileMark will beat the times down), but nevertheless they're improvements. Despite this, however, many back fuel cell technology as the real way forward and with the first fuel cell powered MP3 player due on the market next year, another technology head-to-head seems inevitable.

Toshiba is the inventor behind this latest evolutionary step and it is planning to bring out both flash and hard disk based meth-snorting addicts/players. The former (pictured above) currently measures 10.9 x 3.5 x 2cm and is purported to run over 35 hours after a quick swig. The moving parts variant is 12.5 x 6.6 x 1.9cm and will apparently last a staggering 60 hours, well in excess of any hard disk based players today.

There is further cause for celebration too, because Tosh claims further optimisation between now and next year will see these times increase even further, while physical dimension are going to drop. So confident is Tosh in its technology that it has already booked them in for a spot at the CEATEC Japan exhibition on 4 October and is confident of having them on (flame proofed?) shelves in time for the 2006 festive season.

So next year we’ll just have to explain to grandma and granddad that it is normal for our Christmas stockings to smell of meths and that it had absolutely nothing to do with the house burning down…
